I am very excited to be introducing our new contributor Samira Ibrahim who is a film guru, event organizer and photographer. This remarkable Afro-creative is currently co-ordinating the 1st annual African Film Festival Australia which will be held in Sydney and Melbourne from the 5th till 15th of April, 2012. The festival will include features, documentaries, experimental animations and a special African shorts session promoting upcoming film makers. It aims to highlight the intense complexity of African culture and experience with subjects ranging from a Beethoven style symphony in the Congo, to the exploration of New York CIty through the eyes of the African Diaspora, to the use of photography in rebuilding and healing post war Liberia to the power of the hip hop movement in Senegalese politics.
This is just the kind of spice the Afro-Australia community needs. We always complain that we miss out on all the cool events like Arise Fashion Week or the African Music Awards, but now we are getting what we have been craving for!!! If you are in Sydney or Melbourne, clear your plans, you need to be at this event!
The Festival will screen in Sydney at Dendy’s Opera Quay and Melbourne at the Red Bennies. For the full program and more information visit www.africanfilmfestival.com.au.
