amazing Africa

Saturday was another new chapter from ‘Africa in London’ experiences. I went to the ‘The Amazing Africa Festival‘ in Trafalgar Square. Amazing Africa aims to “recognize and celebrate the many African communities throughout London. To provide a high profile platform to showcase the richness and beauty of the continent, thus helping to change the perceived misconceptions of Africa”.

Once again, amazement dawned on me. Seeing that many people at an African event amazed me. Then to see people walking around feasting on their fried plantain with beans and spinach stew shocked me! A good shock though! I had never seen so many non-African people eat African food! I felt pretty proud seeing people enjoy the food which I eat!

There were stores of all sorts selling food, jewellery, paintings, crafts, clothing, and also giving travel advice. If you didn’t know much about Africa, Amazing Africa would have been a really good free cultural lesson for you.

My favourite part of the day was probably watching the moving performance with a man on stilts dressed in somewhat of a lady’s tribal outfit doing acrobatic tricks, with a group of men dressed in traditional attire following him around playing drums and singing. It felt like the sound of Africa was ringing in my ears. It made me miss Ghana!

I was fortunate enough to meet the mastermind behind the clothing label Kayobi and the slogan ‘Make Fufu Not War‘ – Kwabena Boateng. His vibrant tees honestly match up to his vibrant personality!  I loved seeing people come up to him and ask ‘What is Fufu?’ Their curiousity was testament to what the festival was all about!
