True Fact: I hate chocolate. I always have. We are not friends! And never will be (However there is an exception with white chocolate. It has to be rich like Cadbury Dream. But that makes me sick after two bites).
Hate is not even strong enough to describe my dislike towards it. I DESPISE chocolate!
I get cold shivers when someone gives me something with a spec of chocolate. I start feeling all sick inside. If you have just had chocolate and you stand next to me, that is even worse!
I often wonder why I don’t like chocolate – everyone seems to love it except me.
I have watched this Cadbury Fairtrade advert about 20 times – not because I am trying to find a way to like chocolate, but because I don’t get the storyline. I am probably not meant to get it anyway. But when I first watched it, I had a bit of a shock. I thought it had Juju (voodoo) connotations!
Some people have accused Cadbury of racial stereotyping.
The Advertising Standards Authority stated that
“Although the council acknowledges that Cadbury had used stereotypes in their ads, they felt that the stereotypes were not harmful or offensive“.
The advert’s purpose is to emphasise Cadbury’s 101 year-history of trading with Ghanaian cocoa farmers. Tinny, one of Ghana’s biggest music stars, features in the advert along with one of the country’s best dance troupe – High Spirits. Proceeds from the sale of the music track were for CARE International – a charity working with Ghana’s cocoa communities.
Cadbury has “steadfastly maintained that the company went to considerable lengths to ensure that the ad campaign was culturally sensitive and developed as a joyous and uplifting portrayal of Ghanaian culture and something which Ghanaians can feel proud of”.
Big Ups to Cadbury for shooting the advert in Ghana! They surely went right to the source!
After all, Africa is the biggest grower of Cocoa Beans. Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon lead the way with the most amount of Cocoa plantations in Africa.
The advert is quite fun and colourful. It feels kind of homely to me, because I can spot things I am familiar with.
