God grew tired of us

When I was younger, and my Mum thought I was being ungrateful, she used to quote a saying in Akan. In English it translates into ‘You don’t know tiredness’. Let me elaborate! What she meant was, I was born in Australia, the sun-blessed country. I went to school freely. There was always food in the fridge, even if I said there was nothing to eat, there was always food. There were always clothes on my back and a shelter my head. Yet there were people facing war, poverty and famine. And there was me crying over something like a top I wanted that my Mum wouldn’t buy for me!

Going to Ghana for the first time in 2004, made me understand why my Mum used to say that, but I don’t think I acknowledged that she was completely right. But after watching the documentary ‘God Grew Tired Of Us‘, I realized my Mum was and still is right, I have no idea what tiredness is!

God Grew Tired Of Us is an  award-winning, critically acclaimed film exploring the indomitable spirit of three “Lost Boys” from Sudan who were forced to leave their homeland due to a tumultuous civil war. The film chronicles their triumph over seemingly insurmountable adversities and a relocation to America, where the Lost Boys build active and fulfilling new lives but remain deeply committed to helping friends and family they have left behind.
