Schier shoes are a Namibian/American shoe label who have been producing Velskoen shoes since 1938. Veklskoen (pronounced “fell-skoon” and known locally as “vellies”) are the ancestor of the modern-day desert boot. Inspired by the footwear of the Khoikhoi tribe, vellies were first made in the 1600s from raw materials by members of the Dutch East India Co. The boots were adopted by the British travellers and later renamed the ‘desert boot’. For years, throughout Southern Africa people have been rocking vellies everyday − whether it’s the child going to school or the labourer going to work.
Schier shoes are made in the coastal town of Swakopmund in Namibia by a group of eight Damara men who hand-assemble twenty pairs of shoes without nails each afternoon. The shoes are made from vegetable-dyed Kudu (Antelope) leather which is has exceptional durability and an amazing aesthetic.
