When I started Afroklectic. I had a logo and that was all. At the time I didn’t grasp the idea of a visual language for Afroklectic I still couldn’t figure out what it was in the early stages for it to be defined visually.
I came up with the above look for my identity and tried to work a language into it. I used my final major project as an opportunity to work on a complete language for Afroklectic. Through extensive visual research, I was now armed with a better understanding of what Afroklectic should be and how it should be presented visually.
The new visual language of Afroklectic was inspired by the traditional African Ankara prints which are full of colours, shapes and tessellation. Fabrics are sentimental in African culture. From Ankara fabric worn in Western Africa to Kanga fabric worn in Eastern Africa. Each fabric has a name and an occasion to be worn. I thought it was important for the Afroklectic visual language to carry elements of these fabrics. The rosey pantone colour used is something different, something fresh, a symbol of a new view of Africa. A new culture developing. A new generation. A new Afroklectic! The use of uppercase letters for the logo type representation of the evolution of Afroklectic. A mature and more interactive level for everyone to experience!
