the family

SOURCE: CHANNEL 4

I remember watching an advert about a documentary called ‘The Family‘ a few weeks ago when I was at a relatives house. I was quite curious, so I started to watch it and I have been on it even since. ‘The Family’ is a unique eight-part observational series that documents the universal themes of family life, as one British family opens its doors to viewers.

This season is about the Adesinas from Hackney, East London. There is mum Vicky and her husband Sunday who have been married for 30 years. They are traditional Nigerian parents with strong views on God, love and family values, and with four British-born children from 15 to 27, all living at home. Together they run a family business: a Nigerian takeaway and restaurant. This is the first time in six years all adult children and parents have lived together and tensions simmer as the streetwise kids collide with their parents’ old fashioned ways.

I love it because it’s so familiar to me. In understand the battles between our generation and our parents generation. Events that I have watched have either happened to me in my family, or I know someone it’s happened to. It feels quite homely watching it, especially since I am quite a fair way from my immediate family right now!
