As much as I like living in London at the moment, I an a bit disappointed that I missed out on seeing this production written by Mohammed Ben Abdallah and directed by my very good friend Effie Nkrumah.
The play is set during the times of the transatlantic slave trade. Inside a cell in the dungeons of ELMINA CASTLE on the coast of Ghana, a group of captured slaves hatch a plan for freedom in an attempt to finally end the trade in humans whilst the ghosts of their past and future haunt thier minds.
There have been substantial narratives voicing the African American slave experience but what happened before they got there? What is their story? Who were they before their identity were erased? What about the resistance to slavery in Africa? “THE SLAVES” with excerpts from “The Fall of Kumbi” and “Someone knows my Name”.
I heard from the great vine that it is an amazing production. I am not surprised. I can just imagine how good this production is! I read this praising comment by a viewer on Facebook.
“It must be said, a standing ovation to the production ‘The Slaves’ by (Mohammed Ben Abdallah and) Effie Nkrumah and all the amazing actors that captured my heart. I stand in awe of you all. ‘I refuse to live in chains, I would rather die fighting’ (slightly misquoted)… Words cannot explain, simply do yourself the honour and watch the most outstanding theatre production of all time!”
If you just happen to be in Sydney, I suggest you check it out.
