The Turkana are a Nilotic people (refers to some ethnic groups from southern Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, and Northern Tanzania, who speak Nilotic languages) of who inhabit the northwest Kenya known as the Turkana District. The nomadic pastoralists call themselves Ngi Turkana. They known for raising camels and weaving baskets.
The Turkana people are the third largest ethnic group in Kenya and are believed to have originated from North Africa across the Red Sea.
Ornaments are of vital importance, much emphasis being placed on adornment of both women and young Morani (warrior). For a woman, the ornaments indicate their wealth and marital status. The traditional hairstyle for a woman is a braided Mohawk.
