In a world where brand Africa is dominated by the continents political and social failures, one of the ways to counter this negative onslaught is through emphasising culture and sharing positive personal experiences. This Is My Africa exists to share information about Africa, improve its image and grow its cultural sector. We want to highlight and add value to African cultural products (books, music, film festivals, fashion, travel opportunities, events) by presenting them beautifully and entertainingly. ”
This Is My Africa was directed by the very talented Zina Saro-Wiwahe. Zina is a film-maker, writer freelance researcher, broadcast journalist, and also the founder of AfricaLab – a multimedia company dedicated to transforming the way the world sees Africa. Born in Nigeria, raised in Britian, Zina Saro-Wiwahe has participated in an array of projects like hosting the BBC’s arts program ‘The Culture Show’, been an advisor for the British Council, and judged the Africa In Motion Film Festival Short Film competition. From what I have seen and read, I can see that Zina wants to re-visualise Africa through the arts in innovative way/s. I think AfricaLab and This Is My Africa are interesting answers to re-visualizing Africa.
