I have been thinking about my perception of Africa now and how I thought of it when I was a child. If you asked me when I was 10, what I thought of Africa, I would probably have said ‘Poverty, World Vision ads, no grass, dust roads, mud houses and a lot of witchcraft and voodoo in their movies!’.
I would even watch Ghanaian movies and see a Mercedes Benz or see a massive house and be in complete shock because my perception of Ghana was the complete opposite to what I was seeing. My parents would tell me that they way I am thinking was wrong, but I couldn’t comprehend it since all I saw were children on top of rubbish piles on mainstream TV.
If you ask me now what comes to mind when I hear the word ‘Africa’, I would think A LOT of things, but I think the first words which I would say are ‘Home, culture, food, progression, movement yet slow, life, and old school problems!’.
So what are the first words which spring to mind when you hear the word ‘Africa’?
