Afia is a sustainable women’s fashion line of style and purpose, valuing the art in every step of the production process. Afia was founded by Meghan Sebold after she went to Ghana for a research project on the textile industry whilst she was studying at the University of San Francisco. Intrigued with Ghana’s iconic wax prints and Ghana’s crafty seamstresses, Sebold wanted to develop something which would make a positive impact on society and draw international exposure.
The textiles for the name are sourced from small vendors in Ghana, pieces are hand sewn by the Dzidefo Women’s Cooperative in Kpando, Ghana whilst the clothing pattens are made my individuals in the United States and Ghana. All these practices are supporting fair wage labor, international collaboration and handmade goods.
The name ‘Afia’ is taken from the Ashanti name for a female born on Friday, which is also the day Sebold was born!
I really like the pieces produced by Afia. They are soft, chilled, summery and basic!!!
Just what a girl needs for summer!!! Especially under the burning Australian sun!!!
