In 2001, Franco-Congolese photographer Nicolas Premier went to Brazzaville (Congo) for the first time. Raised by his French mother and Congolese father, Premier was shocked to find the capital of his father’s homeland turned upside down after the civil war. Seeing the devastation made it more difficult for Premier knowing that France had played some role in the war. On his return to Paris, Premier participated in a group art exhibition and produced one off t-shirts featuring the slogan ‘AFRICA IS THE FUTURE‘ inspired by his trip to Africa.
Before long, there was a demand for the shirts.
What I find interesting is that Nicholas Premier refuses to put the slogan on fliers, stickers, basically anything that can’t be worn. He believes the t-shirts and hoodies are a walking conversation which boasts a healthy debate around the continent. Check out the collection at AFRICA IS THE FUTURE (AITF).
The website also features people rocking the apparel well!!! Bias, I may be, but Africa is SOO the future!!!
