Africa meets the the Beverly Hillbillies

SOURCE: STYLE.COM

When I first saw the 2009 Spring Ready-To-Wear African collection by Japanese designer Junya Watanabe in late 2008 I was excited! From the first image, I loved the mix of African print with denim and layers and frills which were in some way reminiscent of traditional African outfits made out the wax block print. After scanning through a few shots of the collection, my excitement turned into dismay. I was unsure about what I was viewing. It was like Africa had just met The Beverly Hillbillies and had tried to adopt the Beverly Hillbilly kind of style, but went wrong somewhere along the way trying to work with wax black print, denim and gingham checks. To top it off, they tried and keep the flow of Africa making extravagent head scraves and stuffing fruits and plantation grown on the Hillbilly’s farm. I think a bit more class could have been added to this collection!
