For a short time in 2008 I worked as a graphic design assistant at a reputable Australian Swimwear label in Sydney.
In my first few weeks of working there, the label was planning a runway show for the Rosemount Sydney Fashion Festival. For a couple of days they were casting models from the festival’s official model pool. I was lucky enough to be working at reception during the casting – acknowledging models as they entered the showroom. It was here where I first saw Senegalese model Aminata Niaria. I thought there was little chance of them casting her. I just thought the label would over look her beauty and go for something that was depicted in their campaign shoots – models with more of an exotic Brazilian look. To my amazement they casted her. I was elated the fact that another sister would be strutting her stuff down the runway!
At the label’s show, my friend and I were a bit disappointed. We thought all the other models looked glammed up with nice hairdos. But they had seem to have forgotten to do Aminata’s hair. I started to think, maybe the hair stylist didn’t know how work African hair. I started thinking of styles I could have done if the hair stylist called me 2 hours before the show and told me she/he needs help styling African hair. I don’t own one, but I could of found some quick weave or lace front wig from somewhere.
Anyway, her image that day never left my mind. And I have always wondered what she has been doing since then. Then about a year ago, I was flicking through a Vogue magazine and saw Aminata Niaria’s face in catwalk pictures from the New York runway. Then later on, I saw her in a another magazine and another! Now I am constantly seeing her in print and TV on some occasions.
What’s making me even happier, is that her hair is always looking great!!!!
