afro-creative: Edward Enninful

I am creatively in love with Edward Enninful. Seriously! I am absolutely mesmerized by Enninful’s talent, achievements and work.

He is a Ghanaian born stylist who is the Fashion director of i-D as well as a contributing editor of American and Italian Vogue. Not to mention, he also stars in the American Vogue documentary ‘The September Issue’. After watching The September Issue, I realised I was ‘creatively’ in love!

Edward Enninful was discovered at the age of 15 or 16 on a train in London by British stylist Simon Foxton who suggested he should try modelling. by the age of 18, his fashionable talent got him nominated for fashion editor at i-D Magazine. Enninful is the youngest person in the magazine’s history to ever achieve that (Could possibly be the youngest person in any magazine history ever).

Edward’s talent has given him the opportunity to work with some of the world’s most influential photographers like Steven Meisel, most glamourous models like Naomi Campbell and iconic brands such as Valentino and Armani.

Edward Enninful seems to have a people approach to fashion. In an interview with Vogue, he notes that, fashion for him is not just about loving the clothes but it’s about knowing the models and their personalities and researching past and present designers. It makes me appreciate the people involved in making the clothes come alive. They are just important as the clothes themselves! There are the designers who create the clothes. The models who need to carry the designs effectively – they are like a blank canvas. The stylists who paint a fashionable piece onto the canvas with clothes and accessories. The make-up and hair artist who refine the blank canvas. The photographer positions the canvas into a landscape and captures it. It’s full throttle!

With that kind of approach, I can see how that has made him successful!
