afro-creative: Eva Sonaike

Eva Sonaike is a London-based furnishings and accessories label which produces hand-finished cushions, notepads and bags made from African fabrics. The label bears the same name as the founder Eva Sonaike, a German born Nigerian who I think is a textbook example of an ‘afro-creative‘. Sonaike studied Journalism in at the London College of Printing, worked as a television producer, completed an MA in Fashion Journalism at the London College of Fashion, worked her way around the fashion industry as a trend reporter, interior stylist, editor, fashion consultant and in 2007 started her label Eva Sonaike. Inspired by the vibrancy and richness of African fabrics, Sonaike’s designs are a result of her exposure to Western and African culture.

“Many people still associate famine, war and suffering with African countries; but I, and many others, know a different side. Style, color and fabrics are very important to us, and many Africans incorporate these elements into the design of their homes.”

If your looking for a bit of African flavour in your home, Eva Sonaike can be found in some of London’s most finest stores – Liberty, Fenwicks of Bond Street, Selfridges and other exclusive boutiques which can be found of the website.
