Afro-Creative: Lucy Aboagye

Lucy Nanayaa Aboagye was born in Norway to Ghanaian parents, and raised in Bunbury, Western Australia. She’s a fashion designer whose work is inspired by her Ghanaian and Norwegian upbringing, the places she’s been and strong influential women she has met throughout her life.

When I first saw Lucy’s work, I fell in love with the intricate detailing on a silk blue dress from her SS11 collection (below) and the fact that her work was not Ankara based. I had become so used to seeing new designers producing Ankara injected collections that I forgot that it was even possible to produce anything other than that!

Her latest collection for Autumn/Winter 2012 is titled FINNMARSLOPET. Named after the Norwegian long distance sled dog race. Old family photos from Lucy’s time living in Trondheim (Norway) prompted her to look back at the Norwegian lifestyle and culture. She began to look into Norway’s love of sled dog racing which led her to designing a collection around the Siberian Husky and the harness they wear whilst racing.

The result, a fierce collection of feminine silhouettes, contrasting textures, and midnight tones and some white. Lucy has not only created clothes but wearable art perfect for the chill of Autumn and Winter.
