afro-creative: Valerie Jaquet

Valerie Jaquet is ready to light up the Australian fashion scene. She recently launched an Amazonian collection of the Amazonia theme White Party at the Ivy in Sydney. Her representation of the Amazon showcased a raw warrior look sprinkled with beauty and class. She drew an inspiration from her background to create a collection of 16 pieces which included dresses and handmade jewellery made from a combination of metal, rope, bamboo, feathers, wood, mixed with denim, leather and beautiful printed silk. Seven gorgeous black models execute the core and beauty of the Amazon in Jaquet’s pieces.

Valerie Jaquet was born in Madagascar, raised in France and now resides in Sydney. She gave up her corporate job and followed her love for fashion and completed a fashion course at  Ultimo Tafe (Sydney, Australia). Jaquet’s love for Latin American culture is reflected in her Masquerade Collection featured on her website. I can see the the curls and the various lengths of tango dresses in her collection. I think there is a tinge of Africa in there too. The black and white print in the collection looks like a modernised version of Ankara fabric. I really like it!!!

I am especially loving the short black and white printed dress and the black and white frilled gown. Both pieces have a beautiful flow about them. I just want to wear them and spin around in them!

And the detailing is something else!

I sometimes think when you have such a graphic print, the detailing of the garment should be simple otherwise it doesn’t do justice to the print. But Valerie has beautifully worked it. The tie-up effect on the black of the black and white mini print dress and the waist tie on the frilled gown combined with the short length at the front vs. the long length at the back…….. IS ABSOLUTELY SUPERB!

Valerie Jaquet notes her designs as “elegant, edgy, classic chic for the sophisticated woman”.
