Afro-Creative: Wanyika Mshila

As part of my experiential research for my Final Major Project, I have been video interviewing young African creatives. Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Wanyika Mshila the founder of Froq Afriq. I had never met her and within two minutes of meeting her, I was blown away!

Mshila came to Australia about 10 years ago from Kenya to further her education. She completed a degree in marketing and started working in finance. Yet, she always had creative blood running through her. She begun dancing at a very young age and her passion for performing has given her the opportunity to work in an upcoming Australian theatre production.

Last year, she took what I would call the adventurous route and started a label by the name of Froq Afriq. An accessory line merging African culture with western style. Her limited edition signature items are sophisticated, elegant and classic hand crafted leather bags with Ankara fabrics and accessories, all designed and made in Australia.

I am inspired by Wanyika Mshila’s spirit and attitude towards bringing creative Africa to Australia.

Mshila is also part of a team working to bringing the first ever African fashion show to Australia in October. I will surely be bringing more details about the event.

You can purchase Froq Afriq on Bluecaravan and keep up to date with the latest pieces on Facebook.
