For their Spring/Summer 2010 collection, the online fashion store Asos has just launched their first ever African collection produced by SOKO. SOKO is a production group based in Kenya which works towards creating eco-friendly clothing, fair employment, offer training and provide skills to people in Kenya’s poorest areas. What has emerged, is a beautiful collection timely pieces an array of colours embedded in Khanga fabrics – a traditional multi-purpose cotton print worn in Eastern Africa. The collection carries the African tailor feel, transformed magnificently into funky items like the playsuit, paperboy skirt, high-waisted shorts, maize dresses, headbands and so forth.
“On our continuing quest to find new inspiration, we recently spent time in Africa working with artisans and small producer groups. the vibrancy of the continent inspired us to create the ‘Asos Africa’ collection with the aim of supporting trade in Africa”.
– Caren Downie (Asos Buying Director)
Asos has taken a big step in changing the way clothing is produced around the world with their fair-trade campaign ‘The Green Room’. And I am pleased to announce that this new Asos Africa collection won’t break the budget with prices starting at £15 – £75 (which is about AU$30 – $150)
