Ethical Bandwagon

Everyone seems to be saving Africa with their ethical fashion collaborations. Don’t be surprised if I announce that I am launching an ethical fashion label with artisans in Africa soon! One of my favourite Australian labels Sass & Bide collaborated last year with UN: The Ethical Fashion Initiative – ‘Not Charity, Just Work‘ making bags and clutches. This year across the Tasman Sea, New Zealand designer Karen Walker has jumped on board with her latest eyewear collection, top off with some killer visuals.

I am always sucked in by the buzz these well-known labels create when they launch their partnerships backed-up with engaging campaigns. I then roll my eyes after 5 minutes of reading article after article praising these labels as if they have just discovered the craftsmanship in Africa and the solution to poverty.

I am not against these initiatives. It’s great and all, I just wonder sometimes about the hype of the collaborations versus impact the project actually makes.
