Some time back, a fellow blogger sent me an article about Ozwald Boateng receiving an honorary degree from the University of Creative Arts (UCA) for his contribution towards British fashion.
When I read the article, I was so elated. Firstly, because I went to the UCA Epsom on exchange last year. From the moment I stepped foot on their campus, I noticed that they must have a very fine fashion department. I couldn’t believe I was looking at pieces by University students. The craftsmanship and quality of the pieces I saw were AMAZING!!!
Secondly, this is an amazing honour for a well deserving recipient who just happens to be African. Thirdly, I have mentioned this before – when you want to follow a particular path and you see someone you can relate to achieving great things in your desired field, it makes you believe in your dream so much more! Ozwald’s achievements reinforce the ‘Yes I Can’ attitude in my mind.
“Ozwald has made such an impact on British fashion – the creativity and spark that characterise his designs inspire our students and raise their aspirations”. – Professor Elaine Thomas, Vice-Chancellor of UCA
I remember at some point I considered studying fashion design and I told my Mum. She was like ‘Oh fashion design. Mmm Gillean, I don’t know. Won’t that be hard for an African person’.
And I said ‘Mum, do you know who Ozwald Boateng is?’
She had no idea who I was talking about, but she knew I had killed her question!
