pride

Before moving to the UK, I thought that considering the large African population in the country, I could walk into virtually every newsagency and find at least one African magazine on the stands.

A week, then two weeks and then three weeks had gone by and I still hadn’t found an African magazine. I started walking into every newagency, bookstores, convenience store, groceries store out of desperation for one. Then a few weeks ago I missed my train to go home from Waterloo station. The next train was due in 30 mins, so I decided to roam through the station to kill time. I always walk past WH Smith at the station, but it always overcrowded in both their stores, so I don’t bother going in. But this day, I did. I went into the first WH Smith and felt like I was looking at the all magazines which were sitting idle on our kitchen table! So I walked out. I walked into the WH Smith in the centre of Waterloo station and I saw PRIDE magazine.

“Pride is (a) unique (magazine), blending multiculturalism with modern UK living. Pride is the face of black Britain. The Pride woman is very aware of her cultural background and eager to retain and promote her identity. However, she is also fully integrated within the British cultural society”.
