reflective discourse

I love the whole idea of discovery, uncertainty and frustration before you reaching a refined solution in a design process. There is a blog called Jonty: Reflective Discourse and I think it encapsulates the beauty of a design process. Jonty van Zeller is a student at the London College of Fashion (UK) majoring in photography. The blog is based on Zeller’s Final Major Project and dissertation on a South African township.

There are amazing photos with splashes of colour, electric hairstyles, fresh fashion styles all taken in a township. But this blog is beyond the photographs.  I feel like I have been taken on a visual and mental ride through Zeller’s process. Jonty is quite candid about the aims of his project. In the early stages of his blog, he clearly states that he doesn’t have a strong concept but he wants to do it in South Africa. You see concept begin to take shape when he writes about the title of his dissertation – ‘The beauty of poverty: an exploration of the ethics of using a SA township as a backdrop to commercial images’. He notes that it could change.

Then he goes deeper in the process by going to South Africa, changing approaches, finding locations for the shoot as well as finding designers, models and so forth.

It’s quite interesting to see it all take shape!

I can’t wait to see and hopefully read the final outcome!
