When I first saw this Heineken advertisement, I was so happy to find out that an African designed something similar to the beer-helmets worn at sporting events. Then I became disappointment when I saw the main character walk into the stadium, and notice other people wearing similar inventions. I was a bit puzzled. I knew the advert was based on a true story. So I told myself I would follow it up after watching the soccer. But I became so immersed in the soccer games that I forget to follow up on it! I would go through a cycle of confusion and curiousity everytime I watched the advert. It got to a stage where I would literally turn away from the TV when I saw the advert.
While browsing on AFRICA IS NOT A COUNTRY, I had a look at ‘Hold On To Your Hat‘ – a post detailing the history behind the colourful helmets known as the ‘Makarapas‘.
After reading that post, everything started to make sense!
The tale of the Makarapas is amazing! It’s truly a piece of art made with a creative African spirit!!!
Now when I watch the Heineken advert, I watch with glee because I now understand the story behind it. I now laugh at my initial confusion when I first saw the advert.
