The Social Studio is an amazing initiative for the young refugee community is Melbourne. Launched in December 2009, The Social Studio helps new arrivals of the community who are unemployed, isolated and have difficulty accessing the right education and training. The Social Studio creates jobs, provides education and encouraging community engagement and social inclusion. They also provide legal advice, counselling, tutoring, formal training in clothing production, retail and hospitality. This equips young refugees with work and life skills which puts them on the right path to following their dreams.
The Social Studio also has it’s own cafe as wells as a clothing labels which used recycled and excess manufacturing materials are gathered from cal industries and transformed into original pieces.
It’s encouraging to see quite a few Africans taking part in the program. In recent years, in Australia we have had an influx of new African migrants and refugees. A major problem is the lack of education and new arrival support for people probably over 20. There seems to be more support for younger people to help them integrate with the community. Whether high school or primary school, there always seems to be programs which help develop the children from day one. As for the adults, it is a different story. So seeing African people taking part in The Social Studio, a fashion enterprise is amazing.
