I have been seeing these images (below) of amazing wax print pieces floating around on Tumblr all week and of course no credit to the designer. I was wondered who designed the pieces, because I felt there was African blood running through it with a different kind of Western flow. The collection didn’t feel like another case of the one-off wax print collections like Juanjo Oliva’s 2010 Spring/Summer collection or Simonetta Ravizza’s 2012 Spring/Summer collection. There was something about this collection which made me very intrigued, besides not knowing who the designer was, and I didn’t know why I felt like this. Thanks to Shadders, who uploaded an album full of these images on Facebook acknowledging the designer as Stella Jean.
After some intense investigation (in other words, a simple google search) I found out that Stella Jean is an Italian born designer of Caribbean origins. Her style is a reflection her heritage and Creole cultures. A mixture of the old and modern age. This combination inspires her to creates in unique pieces extruding femininity and substance.
Her Spring/Summer 2012 collection featured in the images below are based on a ‘wax and stripes philosophy‘.
A social composition is which multiculturalism is treated with a consciousness of traditions. A clear and sincere declaration of intent expressing cultures which break up and merge into unpredictable harmony.
I am guessing that the the wax print would refer to Creole culture and the stripes would refer to the Italian culture. I am not really sure. The foundation of this collection is culturally heavy!
I must say from a visual point of view, wax and stripes is a beautiful marriage emitting vibrancy, culture and style.
