The Harmattan is a dry and dusty West African trade wind. The wind blows south from the Sahara into the Gulf of Guinea between the end of November and the middle of March. On its passage over the desert it picks up fine dust particles which color the sky and distort the sun.
I have only ever been to Ghana during the Harmattan season. Haze overshadows the country, the air is dry, the sun looks like a pink or orange highlighter throughout the day, the humidity is unbearable, making you sweat as if you have just jumped in a pool and the pollen count is too high to even measure.
Somehow, Gold Coast Trading has brought a cooling effect to the Harmattan season with their SS12 collection titled ‘Wind’s from the North‘.
Wind’s from the North is the narration of the journey of the Harmattan wind from dessert to city to sea. The collection is a soothing interpretation of the dry season and brings out the organic beauty of the season.
Designer Emeka Alams’ does not just create clothes, but creates an experience with his collection with process imagery, research, mixtapes and campaign imagery. An amazing package which beautifully unfolds post by post on the Gold Coast Trading (Before 1444) website.
