1444 – We were traded from the gold coast by Europeans x our own African brothers. This trade has changed our world and reshaped our thoughts. Living by European standards throughout the African diaspora we have forgotten what makes our culture powerful, rich and unique. Here we strive for riches and neglect our families, we smile upon others while wishing for their demise, all things associated with the mind frame of those who began this trade.
This collection is about support through sacrifice. I used the Soweto youth riots as a tangible historical reference to kinda act as a home base for everything this mini release represents to me. The Soweto uprising was dark and horrible but it was turning point in the liberation struggle in South Africa. It took a lot of sacrifice but look at the results today. Its important to have those around you who are willing to sacrifice, willing to lose in order to reach the long term good in any arena of life.
I don’t know how to describe Gold Coast Trading! There is something about it that makes me so drawn to the extent that I lose words. I think it’s the thought process behind the brand and the collections that has got me. There is a great sense of history and meaning behind the brand and collection. Emeka is not designing clothes for the sake of designing but he is designing history represented in a new a modern form.
