When football is mentioned in Australia, it’s a WHOLE different ball game to the football the world knows. Football to us in Australia is Australian Rules (AFL), Rugby League and Rugby Union.
Rugby League by far, is one of my favourite sports to watch. I have been a fan of the sport since I was about 4. I used to watch the Rugby games every Friday night with my Dad without fail.
It’s noted as one of the toughest sports in the world. It’s not like American Football where you have a bulk of protection. Rugby players use virtually no protection.
The sport is fast, tactical, and very physical.
I always wondered if an African person in Australia would ever play the game professionally. We don’t seem to have the physicality needed for the sport. Well so I thought.
There is a young Rugby player by the name of Jamal Idris. Born in Australia, Idris is part Aboriginal and part Nigerian. He is Rugby League’s rising star!!! In 2009, he was even named Rookie of the year!
I have watched a few interviews with him, and I always end up in a fit of laughter. He has a quirky attitude off field and is beast on the field with his trademark dreadlocks. It is fantastic seeing a bit of African blood in a sport African would usually stay well away from!
