I don’t know how I stumbled across this image. I was looking for something on Google Images and I completely forgot what I was searching for when I found this beautiful piece of art.
This sculpture is known as ‘African Venus’. It was created by French sculptor Charles Cordier in 1851. The sculpture became quite popular and was regarded as a “powerful expression of human pride and dignity in the face of grave injustice.” For something so old, it actually looks quite modern. When I first saw the image of the sculpture, I thought it was made in the last 20 years or so. The sculpture has a beautiful modern and smooth appeal about it. The female is rocking the natural dreadlock look with her dangly earrings and beaded necklace very well!
