I saw the cover of this book in my local library and I was hooked!
I have been craving for something like this ever since I did my high school major art work four years ago. I knew that there was a movement of contemporary art, but I just found it very difficult to find books or online information about it. Yinka Shonibare was probably the only African artist I knew of, only because his work was exhibited in the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Sydney some years ago. Apart from that all I kept finding were books about African wooden masks, other wooden artifacts and voodoo pieces.
Angaza Afrika – African Art Now has truly satisfied my craving! The moment I got home from the library, I immediately purchased the book online to be delivered to my house in Australia!
Angaza Afrika was originally an exhibition bringing together major works by 12 artists who “best represent the innovative and dynamic artistic practices across the African continent and the African diasporas“. From that, the Angaza Afrika – African Art Now “a highly visual survey of contemporary African art compiled by Christopher Spring, the curator of the African Galleries at The British Museum”. Angaza Afrika – African Art Now means ‘Shed light on Africa’ or ‘Look around Africa’ in Swahili. The book definitely a look around artistic Africa. A great compilation of “stunning visual and physical manifestation of (African) artists’ energy and spirit”.
