going out in style

Eric Adjetey has made a name for himself and his town of Teshie in Accra, Ghana. Adjetey is a coffin designer. Yes COFFIN designer, but with a twist. His family Kane Kwei is known for introducing ‘Designer Coffins’ into the country. This craft certainly allows the departed to go out in style!

Kane Kwei was born in 1920 and started his workshop in the late 40s. His grandson Eric Adjetey Annan has been running the family workshop since 2005. Adjetey gave up the opportunity to study at University to carry the legacy of his grandfather. His grandfather felt that the coffins could become dominant in the market in Ghana and overseas. Eric has surely carried on the legacy!!! The coffins are in constant demand. Eric works with four to seven apprentices at a time with an artist and two tailors.

The coffins are made from Ghana’s Odum tree and are designed to suit the life and personality of the departed. For instance, a coffin was designed as a film projector for a late artist who dreamt about the day his films would be released.

In 2009 Eric was invited by supporters to showcase his designs at exhibitions in Belgium, France and Spain.

The advert below title ‘COFFINS’ was released in April 2009 by SRA RUSHMORE advertising agency for AQUARIUS SOFT DRINK (part of the COCA-COLA ESPAÑAt company) in Spain.
