hsc major work

Here is part of my Visual Arts Major Work in my Final Year of High School (2006). It was a massive collage which included photographs I had taken in Ghana and prints of fabrics I own, bits and pieces about Africa which I had collected – articles, postcards etc.

I then photographed and then turned it into a postcard puzzle package taking inspiration from a postcard package made for the exhibition of American photographer Diane Arbus.

I think this piece of work made me realise how connected I am to my culture. Growing up, there has always been the battle of whether I am Australian or Ghanaian. I am both. But I think I am more immersed in my Ghanaian culture.

I had written an artist intent, but I don’t know where it is. Everytime I look at this piece, new insights come to me. If I had to create this again, I think it would be much bigger. I have been to Ghana a 2nd time and I have learnt more about Africa as well. And I am still learning!
