The official video of ‘Oliver Twist‘ by Nigerian artist D’banj has been finally been released with cameos by Kanye West, and fellow GOOD Music artists Big Sean and Pusha T, and a bit of Azonto’ing!!!
Inspired by the Charles Dickens classic, the song was originally launched last year with a video featuring D’Banj, Don Jazzy, Wande Coal and Dr SID dancing to the song. The video kick-started a video competition which encouraged people to record themselves dancing/jonzing to Oliver Twist.
A very smart and engaging PR move!
I fell in love with the song watching entries on YouTube. The entries were hilarious and embarrassing!
The winners were the Backyard Crew who danced their way through Lagos. Their 4 min video gave me quick tour of Lagos! I loved it!
Now here is the same song covered by Ryan Parrott & The Rumours.
This is Africa criticizes this version with a post titled ‘5 Reasons why White Artists Don’t Cover African Artists‘ (you should have a read). I don’t have the same viewpoint, but I found it interesting that this cover could stir such a reaction!
I find this rendition a bit odd. It doesn’t have the right vibe. It’s been stripped bare. No bouncing Naija beats, or dance moves, just a voice and the guitar. I think Ryan’s voice is smooth and soulful, but this cover is not soothing to my ears.
Now to Estelle’s rendition. I love Estelle, but this rendition is wrong! No further comment!!!
