The Raw Material Company

There are a couple of goals that I need to achieve in the next decade and I am not going to lie running my own art gallery is one of them. I love visiting art galleries when I travel and particularly comparing galleries and their exhibitions to the ones available in Australia.

I came across the Raw Material Company on Twitter. The exhibitions at Raw Material Company make me literally want to jump on the next plane to Senegal. Based in the capital of Senegal − Dakar,  the centre is the brain child of Koyo Kouoh, a Cameroonian born curator and cultural producer. Her range of work concentrates on photography, video and public interventions. She has received world wide success exhibiting across the United States, Brazil, Switzerland and Germany.

The exhibition which drew my eye was the Chronicle of a Revolt. This photography exhibition was born out of a series of debates and gatherings within the context of a heated Senegalese political election.  Twenty photographers presented their stories highlighting various differing dialogues on Senegalese politics.

The current exhibition at the centre  is a travelling series titled “Addressing Public Space in the City of Douala, Cameroon“. This exhibition focuses on the growing need for art in public spaces in the Cameroonian city of Doaula.  For more on this exhibition visit ICUAP.

Raw Material Company is now officially on my travel list.
