the selby goes to an Afroccentric place

Todd Selby is a portrait, interiors, and fashion photographer and illustrator. His project The Selby offers an insider’s view of creative individuals living around the world in their personal spaces with an artist’s eye for detail”

Todd Selby recently went to the home of Carpet Designer Malene B in Brooklyn (posted 12/05/10).

Malene B is an African-American carpet design with a multi-disciplined background in textile arts, painting and illustration. Her carpet designs are a bold interpretation of cultural icons, landscapes and rituals which she has seen and experience while travelling to places like Dakar, Mumbai and Kuala Lumper. She has visited Ghana as part of a three week exchange program sponsored by Afrikan Poetry Theatre to learn native crafts, language and dance. She’s also spent three months backpacking in South East Asia, soaking up the culture and learning about textiles.

Malene’s home is a reflection of her extensive travels and her Afro-Carribean heritage. Malene notes Interior Architect Henry Mitchell as the creative genius behind the sleek interior of her house. Her home is beautifully furnished with amazing art pieces like the chair she is sitting on in the photo above. Every piece appears to be situated with enough breathing space to admire and appreciate, like a gallery.
