I am a huge fan of Drake. I just the way he mixes Hip-Hop rhymes with cool and unique beats like he has just created a chemical balance which was never balancing before. One thing I am very drawn to when it comes to Drake’s music is collaborations. Drake collaborates with some of the most unlikely of artists. Crew Love and Trust Issues featuring The Weeknd are examples of an unlikely, yet electric combination.
I originally though that The Weeknd was a band and then I found out that it is a one man band! The Weeknd is the stage name of Abel Tesfaye a Canadian-Ethiopian artist and producer. He started uploading his songs onto YouTube in 2010 and since then he has worked with the likes of Drake, Florence and the Machine, and Lady Gaga. His sound is soulful with an electric high overtones married with unique beats like Drake.
In the past 6 months, I have read on a few music blogs that label The Weeknd a the R&B artist to watch out for 2012. I am not sure if I would classify The Weekend as R&B. Some say he is an R&B artist, Wikipedia labels him as an R&B/Contemporary/Post-dubstep kind of artist. (I didn’t even realise that we were past the times of Dubstep and into the ‘post era’. )Either way, I think we need to keep our eyes peeled for The Weeknd. It will be interesting to see if Africans catch onto his sound.
His solo albums House of Balloons, Thursday and Echoes of Silence, all released in 2011, are available for free download at weeknd.com.
